Frequently Asked Questions
Thinking about hiring a coach for your ultramarathon or stage race? You probably have a few questions first. Below are the most common things athletes ask me about remote ultramarathon coaching, strength training, nutrition support, and stage race preparation. If your question isn’t listed here, just reach out and I’ll be glad to help.
-
If you’re training for your first ultra, preparing for a bucket-list stage race, or tired of piecing together random plans, you’re ready. Coaching is for anyone who wants structure, accountability, and expert guidance to go farther than they could on their own.
-
Both. I coach runners from their first 50k all the way to multi-day stage races and 100-mile ultras. Whether your goal is to finish strong, set a personal best, or compete at the front, your program is built around your fitness, experience, and race goals.
-
That’s a common goal. You don’t need elite ambitions to benefit from coaching. Many of my athletes simply want to finish their race healthy, confident, and prepared. A structured plan gives you the best chance to get there without overtraining or injury.
-
A training plan is static. It does not change if you get sick, busy, or injured. Coaching adapts to your life week by week (and often day by day). You also get unlimited feedback, strategy, and support.
Especially in the world of ultrarunning, nuance, context, and subjective feedback matter more than in shorter races like road marathons. Ultra training is not just about hitting paces or metrics. It is about learning how your body responds to stress, fueling, terrain, and fatigue. That is where AI models and cookie-cutter training apps fall short. They cannot provide context, adjust strategy on the fly, or give meaningful feedback when it matters. A coach can.
-
Most runners think they need 20+ hours a week to prepare for an ultra. That’s not true. With structured training, you can build endurance and strength on as little as 6–10 hours per week. I design plans around your lifestyle so you can stay consistent and still get results.
-
That’s exactly why coaching is so valuable. Training plans are static, but your life isn’t. If you get sick, travel for work, or your schedule shifts, I adjust your workouts so you stay on track without stress. The program is built to flex with your life instead of breaking when things get busy.
-
Yes. Strength training is a key part of ultramarathon performance. I provide a movement assessment, gait analysis, and video feedback on your lifting form at no extra cost. You can submit as many videos as you like, whether it is squats, deadlifts, mobility work, or running mechanics, and I will review them to make sure you are moving safely and effectively.
This is not just “general gym work.” My approach to strength training for trail runners and ultrarunners focuses on durability, efficiency, and injury prevention. That means you are not only stronger, but also more resilient to the demands of steep climbs, long descents, and back-to-back long days on the trail.
-
Yes. Nutrition is a core part of ultramarathon coaching. I want to be clear that I am a nutrition coach, not a dietitian, which means I do not prescribe strict meal plans. Instead, I work with you on:
Daily nutrition targets (protein, carbs, fats) that support your training load
Ultramarathon fueling strategies for both training and racing
Hydration and electrolyte planning to prevent bonking or cramping
Gut training so your body can absorb fuel during long hours on the move
Adjustments to support body composition and overall health goals
Practical strategies that align with your lifestyle, preferences, and budget
How much you want me involved is always up to you. Some athletes only want a race-day fueling plan, while others ask for ongoing support in balancing training, recovery, nutrition, and body composition goals. This support is included as part of coaching.
-
Yes. Stage races require a unique mix of endurance, recovery, nutrition, strategy, and planning. I specialize in helping athletes prepare for events like the RacingThePlanet races, Marathon des Sables, and Arctic ultras where gear management, recovery between stages, and fueling matter just as much as fitness.
We will cover not only your training but also race logistics, packing strategies, and nutrition planning for multi-day efforts. This kind of preparation gives you the confidence to show up to your race knowing every detail has been covered.
-
If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re training “the right way,” struggled with injuries, or plateaued in performance, then yes, coaching is worth it. Instead of guessing, you’ll know exactly what to do each week, and why. Most athletes see faster progress with fewer setbacks.
-
Your training plan is delivered through TrainingPeaks. I update your workouts weekly, but I also review your completed workouts daily and adjust based on both the data and your subjective feedback. Athletes are encouraged to reach out anytime their schedule changes. When life shifts, we adjust the plan so you can keep moving forward in the most logical way.
We also have 30-minute Zoom calls as often as once a week if needed to go over your training, race prep, and strategy in real time. I am based in Europe, but I always find a way to accommodate clients no matter where they live in the world. Between calls, you can also reach me directly on WhatsApp any day of the week for quick questions, updates, or feedback.
Because ultramarathon training is complex, remote coaching goes far beyond just delivering workouts. I help you navigate gear choices, terrain-specific workouts, fueling practice, and recovery strategies. Coaching is fully online, but it is highly personal and interactive. You are never left on your own.
-
You’ll have direct access to me every week. I review your workouts daily in Training Peaks and adjust as needed. We can also have 30-minute Zoom calls as often as once a week if you want face-to-face check-ins. Plus, you can message me on WhatsApp any day for quick questions or updates. You’re never left to figure things out alone.

Coaching typically costs $300 USD per month, and is billed month to month through a secure subscription with Stripe, which makes payments simple to set up and manage. For athletes who prefer to commit further in advance, I also offer discounted rates for pre-payment, such as paying several months up front or a full year in advance. It is never required, but it is an option for those who want to lock in their training and save a little in the process.
There are no long-term contracts. I do, however, recommend committing to at least four months, not as a contract, but because real progress takes time. Your body needs consistent training to build fitness, strength, and durability. Four months gives us enough time to make meaningful adaptations, build resilience, and set you up to perform at your best on race day. -
We begin with a no-pressure call to get to know each other. We will talk about your goals, training history, and personal situation, and decide together if coaching is the right fit. There is absolutely no pressure to make a decision during the call.
If we both feel it is a good match, you will complete a client intake form and set up your monthly subscription through Stripe. From there, we will schedule a program kickoff call where we build out your first week of training together. I’ll also get you connected with Training Peaks so everything is ready to go.
You’ll be ready to start your new training journey just a couple of days after the consultation call. Once everything is set up, it’s time to rock and roll.
-
No. You can train effectively with just time and effort. However, GPS and heart rate data allow me to analyze your training more precisely and adjust your program faster. If you already use a Garmin, Suunto, Coros, or Polar, we will sync it to TrainingPeaks. If you are unsure which device to get, I am happy to give advice and answer questions to help you choose the right one for your needs.
-
No. Every athlete gets a Premium Training Peaks account included in coaching. If you already have one, I will link it so you keep all your historical training data.
